Joint-State Solution Principles

The Joint-State Solution (“JSS”) to the Israel-Palestine problem was mooted several months ago.

The JSS is pragmatic and do-able, yet there would be certain fundamental prerequisites for it to take effect in the current dispensation.

  1. Israeli arrogance would need to be mitigated, perhaps by the succession of current Israeli leaders by a more humane generation, a generation rooted in the realisation of perpetrated cruelties and impossibly inhumane social actions like the cantonisation and imprisonment of West Bank inhabitants. So no more being horrible to the Arabs! The Jews are going to have to suck it up and treat the Arabs like brothers – it is even Biblical: Leviticus 19:34.
  2. The Palestinians would need to give de facto recognition of Israel as a state, as that same Israel would constitutionally also become Palestine. So no more intending to tear down the Israeli state or killing all the Jews!

Israel-Palestine conflict religious in nature

The Israel/Palestine conflict was not originally religious in nature. As recently as 50 years ago, major players on both sides were all secular and justified their territorial claims in terms of nationalism. Today, however, the loudest voices among Israelis and Palestinians alike express themselves in religious terms. Freidenreich will examine why religion played a marginal role early in the conflict, what has changed and what it may mean for the future and the prospects for peace.
