Joint-State Solution Principles

The Joint-State Solution (“JSS”) to the Israel-Palestine problem was mooted several months ago.

The JSS is pragmatic and do-able, yet there would be certain fundamental prerequisites for it to take effect in the current dispensation.

  1. Israeli arrogance would need to be mitigated, perhaps by the succession of current Israeli leaders by a more humane generation, a generation rooted in the realisation of perpetrated cruelties and impossibly inhumane social actions like the cantonisation and imprisonment of West Bank inhabitants. So no more being horrible to the Arabs! The Jews are going to have to suck it up and treat the Arabs like brothers – it is even Biblical: Leviticus 19:34.
  2. The Palestinians would need to give de facto recognition of Israel as a state, as that same Israel would constitutionally also become Palestine. So no more intending to tear down the Israeli state or killing all the Jews!

The 2-state “solution” to IsraelPalestine has not actually solved anything.

Here is a proposed solution for consideration by everyone in Israel and Palestine:

  1. Call the country “Israel” and “Palestine” – two mutually interchangeable names, much like a name and a surname of one and the same person, or the name of one thing in one language and the name of the very self-same thing in another language. “Israel” and “Palestine” would be alternate names for the exact same country whose borders would encompass all current Israel, Gaza, West Bank, East Jerusalem, Golan Heights and any other applicable territories in a unified sovereign state.
  2. Parliament, Ministries and governmental positions are filled and run on a joint basis. Half the seats in parliament may be filled by Jews and half by Arabs. Everything must be done on consensus where a vote on a specific matter breaks even. Ministries must be filled and run by joint staff. For example, Minister of Defence is a joint post, run jointly by a Jew and an Arab, much like joint-managing directors run a company. They do everything on the basis of agreement or consensus.
  3. Jewish and Arab refugees are allowed to return in a orderly fashion as managed by proper processing by the jointly-run Ministry of the Interior.
  4. Society is integrated and racism outlawed. Mutual respect or at least a semblance of it is the new way of life.

Death – the great equaliser

In Genesis 3:19, Elohim (God) says to Adam: “You are soil (עָפָר – dry earth) and to soil you shall return.”

We know that all human bodies have the same chemical composition of the earth – the land of the world, and no matter what position you may enjoy in life’s society upon the earth, death is going to bring you down to the level of all humans – the dry land itself.

You will become a part of the dry land itself upon dying.

Death is the great equaliser. This fact should deeply humble ourselves.

Does it then not behoove us to deal faithfully in our lives and respectfully in all our human interactions?

All humans equal

Eve became the mother of all living (Gen 2:20).

The human (אָדָם – Adam) was created on the sixth day (יוֹם – day, period or time – Gen 1:31) and given the mandate by God (אֱלֹהִים – Elohim– Gen 1:28) to fill and subdue (כָּבַשׁ – dominate) the earth – the land. This instruction implies the entire human race, and since the entire human race came from one source, Eve, then the entire human race has the equal responsibility of filling and subduing the land – not one group of people above the other.

Note: The argument that Eve could not have been the mother of all humans is refuted by the fact that she had sons and daughters and they interbred in this permitted initial dispensation of strength of the human bloodline, and by recent archaeological evidence that the human race sprang from a single source (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/human-migration.html).

Equality amongst Palestinians and Israelis

“An apartheid situation exists in the West Bank. There are settlements and there are Palestinians, and there is a complete separation between them,” he said.

“There are roads for Jews only, there are checkpoints, and there is a curfew. The population is separated. The human rights of the Palestinians are completely violated,” Zahalka added.

He also pointed out that during the apartheid, blacks and whites were separated, but the current situation was of Palestinians being separated from Palestinians, through the use of fences, roadblocks, and limited travel.

“It’s worse,” he said, “Even those arriving from South Africa say the situation in the occupied territories is worse than the apartheid.”

Zahalka said it was his dream for there to be equality amongst Palestinians and Israelis, and that he wanted Israel to be a country for all its citizens.
