Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has received a one year suspended sentence and fine for his role in a corruption case which led to his resignation in 2008. Olmert was originally accused of accepting cash bribes from an American supporter and claiming expenses from overseas trips twice. However, he was convicted of a lesser charge of breach of trust, for helping a friend’s associate to obtain government contracts.
The former leader may now run for parliament again, due to the lighter sentence. However, he can not take up a cabinet post until the resolution of another trial for corruption offences relating to real estate bribery in Jerusalem.
